The National Rail website and app are the main booking platforms for train travel across England, Scotland, and Wales. Trainline is a widely used third-party alternative. Booking in advance typically secures lower fares than buying on the day. You can collect tickets from station machines using your booking reference, or use mobile e-tickets directly on your phone.

UK trains offer three main ticket types: Advance (cheapest, locked to a specific train), Off-Peak (valid outside rush hours, flexible on which train), and Anytime (most expensive, no restrictions). A BritRail pass is available exclusively to non-UK residents and covers unlimited travel across the network for a set number of days, check current options in the booking widget.

London has multiple major terminals, each serving different regions. King's Cross handles services to Edinburgh and northern England. Paddington serves the west including Bath and Bristol. There are no luggage fees on UK trains and no strict weight limits. But space is limited. Most carriages have overhead racks for smaller bags and dedicated luggage areas near doors for larger suitcases. During peak hours these fill quickly, so arrive early to secure space. Bulky items like bicycles typically require a free reservation on long-distance services.

Advance train tickets booked weeks ahead can compete with or beat budget airline fares, once you factor in airport transfers and baggage fees. Last-minute train tickets are generally more expensive than flights. For routes under three hours, London to Manchester, Edinburgh to Glasgow, trains are often faster door-to-door since stations are centrally located.

LNER operates frequent direct services from London King's Cross to Edinburgh, typically taking around four and a half hours. Avanti West Coast runs London Euston to Manchester and Glasgow. GWR covers London Paddington to Bristol, Cardiff, and the southwest. CrossCountry connects cities outside London, such as Birmingham to Edinburgh. Book ahead for the best fares on all routes.

UK trains generally run reliably, though delays do occur, during severe weather or planned engineering works, common on weekends. If your train is delayed 15 minutes or more, you can claim compensation through the Delay Repay scheme run by most operators.
